Anchorage to Denali: Drive, Train or Bus, and the Views
Anchorage to Denali by car, train or bus: 2027 fares, times, where the mountain shows on the route, and 10 years of cloud data on the odds.

Anchorage to Denali is about 237 miles on the George Parks Highway, which works out to roughly five hours by car, six hours on the Park Connection bus, or 7 hours 20 minutes on the Alaska Railroad's Denali Star. The National Park Service rounds it to 240 miles.
Choosing between them comes down to price, schedule and what you want to see on the way. You will not see the mountain from the park entrance. Terrain hides Denali for the final 25 miles of the drive. If you see it on this trip, it will most likely be somewhere between Talkeetna and Cantwell.
This guide covers each way to get there, fares for 2027, where the summit is actually in view from the road and the rails, and how often it is clear while you are passing.

Where You Can See Denali on the Anchorage to Denali Drive
On the Anchorage to Denali drive, the summit is in line of sight, terrain permitting, from about Mile 62 to Mile 211. It is closest and highest in the sky between Viewpoint South (Mile 134.8) and Hurricane Gulch (Mile 174).
We mapped this by sampling the highway every 400 meters and tracing a sightline to the 20,310-foot summit across a terrain model (AWS Terrarium elevation tiles), with Earth's curvature and normal atmospheric refraction included. By terrain alone, the summit is visible from about 72% of the route. Trees are not in the model. Forest lines much of the highway south of Mile 135, so the real number is lower, and the clear views come at river crossings, open bogs and pullouts.
| Parks Hwy Mile | Place | Distance to summit | Summit height above horizon | In line of sight? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Downtown Anchorage | 133 mi | 0.8° | Yes, from open shoreline |
| 42 | Wasilla | 115 mi | 1.2° | No, hills in the way |
| 57 | Houston | 108 mi | 1.3° | Yes |
| 98.7 | Talkeetna turnoff | 72 mi | 2.6° | Yes |
| 114.9 | Trapper Creek | 58 mi | 3.4° | Yes |
| 134.8 | Denali Viewpoint South | 41 mi | 4.9° | Yes |
| 147 | Byers Lake area | 35 mi (closest point) | 5.7° | Yes |
| 162.7 | Denali Viewpoint North | 40 mi | 4.9° | Yes |
| 174 | Hurricane Gulch | 45 mi | 4.2° | Yes |
| 201 | Broad Pass summit | 61 mi | 2.8° | Yes |
| 210 | Cantwell junction | 69 mi | 2.4° | Yes, last good view |
| 237 | Park entrance | 80 mi | n/a | No |
For scale, the full moon is about half a degree wide. From Viewpoint South the summit stands about ten moon-widths above the horizon. From Anchorage it is under two, and roughly 40% of the mountain's height is below the curve of the Earth, as our Mount Denali guide explains.
The long blind stretch at the end is easy to miss on a map. After about Mile 212 the highway drops into the Nenana River valley, and the ridges of the outer range block the view all the way to the entrance. Inside the park, the first rest stop with a view of the mountain is Mountain Vista, at Mile 13 of the park road.
Which side of the car
Driving north, Denali sits off to the right between Houston and Willow, then mostly ahead and to the left from the Talkeetna turnoff on. North of Viewpoint South it moves to your left side and, past Broad Pass, behind your left shoulder. Driving back to Anchorage, it is on the right and ahead, on the passenger side.
Stops worth planning around
- Denali Viewpoint South, Mile 134.8. The best-known roadside view on the highway, with viewing scopes, a day-use parking area and camping, according to The Milepost.
- Denali Viewpoint North, Mile 162.7. Inside Denali State Park, with a wider look at the Alaska Range.
- Talkeetna, 14 miles up the spur road from Mile 98.7. The flightseeing base and a good overnight stop. Our Denali tour guide compares the flights.
- Broad Pass, around Mile 201. The highway's high point at about 2,400 feet, per The Milepost's Parks Highway log. It is open and mostly treeless, so the view is wide when the range is out.
Anchorage to Denali by Train
The Alaska Railroad's Denali Star leaves Anchorage at 8:20 AM and reaches Denali at 3:40 PM, daily from May 12 to September 16 in 2027. Adventure Class costs $205 one way for adults and $103 for children 2 to 11. GoldStar, with dome seating and breakfast and lunch included, costs $411 for adults.
The train is slower than the car, but north of Talkeetna it leaves the highway and follows the Susitna River and Indian River into country no road reaches. It crosses Hurricane Gulch on a 296-foot-high bridge, per the railroad's route description.
Our sightline model shows two windows on the northbound train:
- South of Talkeetna, roughly 10:05 to 11:20 AM. The tracks run up the Susitna valley with the summit 52 to 97 miles away. The railroad itself points passengers to this stretch for views of Denali "rising high above the Susitna River".
- Hurricane to Broad Pass, roughly 1:15 to 3:00 PM. The summit is 44 to 70 miles away and higher in the sky.
Between them comes a blind spot. From just south of Curry to Chulitna, about 30 rail miles, the train runs in the Susitna canyon and the summit is hidden. The final 24 miles into the Denali depot are blind too. By terrain alone, the summit is in view for about 55% of the rail route, compared with 72% of the highway.
Sit on the left side going north and the right side coming back. Northbound, the summit is left of the train for almost all of the stretches where it can be seen. GoldStar's dome makes the side matter less.
Southbound, the Denali Star leaves the park at 12:30 PM and reaches Anchorage at 8:00 PM. There is no same-day round trip.
Anchorage to Denali by Bus
The Park Connection motorcoach is the cheapest scheduled way from Anchorage to Denali, at $115 one way for adults and $57.50 for children. It runs twice a day: the 6:30 AM Denali Express arrives about 12:30 PM, and the 3:00 PM Park to Park arrives about 8:30 PM.
Both buses leave from the Dena'ina Civic Center downtown and stop in Talkeetna. They drop off at the main park-area hotels. The morning bus also stops at the train depot. Park Connection's 2027 schedule runs the PM bus north from May 15 to September 13, but the AM bus only from June 2 to August 30, so check your dates before you book.
A bus is a good fit for a one-way trip. You can take the train north and the bus back, or the other way round, and ride each once.
Driving From Anchorage to Denali
Driving from Anchorage to Denali takes just under five hours without stops. The route starts on the Glenn Highway and turns onto the Parks Highway at Mile 35, and it is open year-round. The highway narrows to two lanes past Wasilla, and services thin out north of the Talkeetna turnoff, so fill up in Wasilla.
A car is the only option that lets you wait for the mountain. If clouds cover the summit at 9 AM and lift at 2 PM, you can stay at Viewpoint South or turn around. A bus or train goes by on schedule whatever the sky is doing.
Once you reach the park, private cars can use the park road only as far as Mile 15 (Savage River) in summer. Past that point you need a park bus. The 2026 bus season has ended, and Reserve Denali opens 2027 reservations on December 1, 2026. The Denali National Park guide covers fees, campgrounds and how far you can drive in each season. The entrance fee is $15 per person aged 16 and over, and the park does not accept cash.
Before a winter or shoulder-season drive, check Alaska 511 for road conditions. Blowing and drifting snow near the Alaska Range and moose on the road are the usual winter hazards.
Odds of Seeing Denali on the Way
In ten years of modeled cloud data, the summit was clear while a summer traveler from Anchorage to Denali would have been in a stretch with a view on only about one day in five. Switching between the car, train and bus barely changed that. A car that could stop and wait anywhere along the route between 6 AM and 10 PM had a clear hour on about a third of days.
We used ten years (2016 to 2025) of hourly cloud-cover data for the summit grid cell from Open-Meteo's historical archive, which uses its default best-match model blend. A day counts if at least one hour shows summit cloud cover of 30% or less during the hours you would be in a stretch with a view. For the two-day drive, the window is noon to 10 PM on the first day, including the evening in Talkeetna, and 6 AM to noon on the second.
| How you travel | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | May to Sep |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drive, leaving Anchorage at 8 AM | 25% | 25% | 17% | 15% | 23% | 21% |
| Denali Star northbound | 27% | 28% | 20% | 19% | 24% | 23% |
| Denali Star southbound | 25% | 27% | 21% | 16% | 24% | 23% |
| Park Connection, 6:30 AM | 24% | 24% | 16% | 14% | 23% | 20% |
| Park Connection, 3:00 PM | 25% | 26% | 22% | 17% | 23% | 23% |
| Car, free to stop any time 6 AM to 10 PM | 42% | 43% | 33% | 27% | 36% | 36% |
| Car over two days, with a Talkeetna overnight | 47% | 51% | 39% | 34% | 44% | 43% |
These are past frequencies from one model grid cell, not probabilities for your trip, so use them to rank options. Model cloud cover over a 20,000-foot peak is an approximation, and a cloud-free summit can still sit behind low cloud closer to you. But the pattern holds in every month of the data: the fixed schedules all land within a few points of each other, and the flexible car itineraries come out well ahead. June came out best among the summer months and August worst.
The morning sky is also a useful signal. In the same May to September data, when the summit was clear at 7 AM it was still clear at 10 AM on 72% of those days (166 days in ten years). When it was cloudy at 7 AM, it had cleared by 10 AM only 7% of the time.
So the night before, and again before you leave, check the live Denali visibility forecast. Its scores come from a weighted atmospheric model of visibility distance, cloud cover, precipitation and humidity, and the page also embeds the Denali webcams so you can see the range for yourself. If the morning looks clear, leave early and stop at Viewpoint South. If it looks gray, a mid-morning view is unlikely, so there is little to gain from an early start.
Anchorage to Denali in Winter
From late September to mid-May the only scheduled public transport from Anchorage to Denali is the Aurora Winter Train. It runs north on Saturdays and south on Sundays between September 19, 2026 and May 9, 2027, with extra midweek trips in February and March 2027.
The northbound train leaves Anchorage at 8:30 AM and reaches Denali at 3:55 PM. Southbound, it leaves Denali at 12:30 PM and reaches Anchorage at 8:00 PM. All seats are Adventure Class. The winter fare table lists Anchorage to Healy, the year-round town 12 miles north of the park, at $192 one way. It does not show a separate Anchorage to Denali fare, so confirm it with the railroad at 800-544-0552.
The timing works out well. Even on December 19, the sun is up at Talkeetna from 10:27 AM to 3:27 PM, so both stretches with a view fall in daylight. Winter skies also came out clearer at the summit in the same model data. From November to March, the summit was clear during the train's viewing windows on about 34% of days, compared with 23% for the summer Denali Star. Winter model cloud data is less reliable, so take that as a direction rather than a precise figure.
Winter at the park itself is much quieter. Only the Winter Visitor Center and Riley Creek Campground stay open, and the park road is open to cars only to Park Headquarters (Mile 3) in midwinter, then usually to Mountain Vista (Mile 13) from mid-February, according to the NPS. Healy, the nearest year-round community, is the usual place to stay. Long nights also make this a northern lights trip, and our Alaska aurora tour guide and the live aurora forecast cover that side.
Common Questions
How long is the drive from Anchorage to Denali?
The drive from Anchorage to Denali is about 237 miles and takes just under five hours without stops. With a detour to Talkeetna and time at the viewpoints, plan for seven to eight hours.
Can you do Denali as a day trip from Anchorage?
You can, but it means about ten hours of driving, and there is no same-day round trip by train. Most people who only have a day are better off with a flightseeing trip from Talkeetna, two hours north of Anchorage, where the mountain is 59 miles away.
Is the train from Anchorage to Denali worth it?
The train is worth it if the trip itself is part of the point. It goes through roadless country and over the Hurricane Gulch bridge. It costs nearly twice as much as the bus, takes about 2.5 hours longer than driving, and gives you no chance to wait for clouds to clear.
Can you see Denali from Anchorage?
Yes, on clear days, from open spots such as Point Woronzof and the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. At 133 miles it is a low white shape on the horizon, and about 40% of its height is hidden by the Earth's curve.
The Best Plan for Most Trips
For most travelers the best way from Anchorage to Denali is to drive north over two days with a night in Talkeetna, then come back by train or bus if you do not want to drive twice. In ten years of modeled cloud data it had the most days with a clear hour while in view, 43% from May to September against about 21% for a single drive leaving at 8 AM.
If you are not driving, take the Denali Star north and sit on the left, and keep your expectations realistic: it is a beautiful ride whether or not the summit shows. Either way, check whether Denali is visible today before you set off. A clear hour at Viewpoint South beats anything you will see at the park entrance. Only the deep park road does better, and the NPS expects buses to return to Eielson and Wonder Lake in 2027.
